AdBlue® Technology

What is AdBlue®.

AdBlue® is a biodegradable, water-based additive that’s been developed specifically to make your engine more environmentally friendly.

A Volkswagen fitted with AdBlue® technology has reduced nitrogen oxide emissions.

How it works.

The system uses an Oxidation Catalytic Converter, combined diesel particulate filter with reduction catalytic converter, and an injection of AdBlue®. The solution is stored separately from your fuel tank and is pumped in small quantities into the exhaust when the engine is running – breaking down nitrogen oxide gas into water vapour and nitrogen gas.

Buying AdBlue®.

Depending on your personal driving style and any increased engine load, your car may consume approximately 1.5L of AdBlue® every 1000km. You can refill the AdBlue® tank yourself with bottles purchased from your Volkswagen dealer. Selected major service stations also stock AdBlue® and are equipped with AdBlue® refill facilities.

Refill with care.

AdBlue® is a corrosive liquid, so we advise you wear protective clothing when handling. If it touches your eyes, skin or respiratory organs or is swallowed, rinse with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical help immediately. Do not try to induce vomiting unless recommended by a doctor. If small quantities of AdBlue® come into contact with the vehicle’s paintwork wipe them off and if necessary rinse the area with water.

For more information please refer to your vehicle owner’s manual.
How to refill your AdBlue®.
Refilling your AdBlue® is just like topping up your oil or coolant. Just follow these 3 simple steps:
Step 1 A dash message will notify you when your AdBlue® is low. We recommend re-filling before your range indicator shows that you have 1000km remaining before your AdBlue® runs out. Remember your vehicle won’t start if the AdBlue® tank is empty.
Step 2 Find the filler nozzle next to the main diesel fuel cap, under the fuel flap, on the driver's side of your car – it’s the nozzle with the blue cap.
Step 3 Grab your AdBlue® bottle, screw it on to the tank’s nozzle then push the bottle in firmly. The valve will open up and let the AdBlue® fill up.
